WCAG 2.1 Check Point 1.4.12 - Text Spacing

Summary:

Check that content remains readable and operable after applying a set of customized text style properties.

Details:

For user agents that allow customized text style properties, no loss of content or function should occur when setting all of the following (while not changing any other style property):

  • Line height (line spacing): to at least 1.5 times the font size;
  • Spacing underneath paragraphs: to at least 2 times the font size;
  • Letter spacing (tracking): to at least 0.12 times the font size;
  • Word spacing: to at least 0.16 times the font size.

When the content cannot adapt to these settings, users with low vision, dyslexia, learning and cognitive disabilities may not be able to read or understand content.

Cascading Style Sheet/HTML technologies are quite able to allow for the specified spacing metrics. Plugin technologies would need to have a built in ability to modify styles to the specified metrics
