Philippines Access Audit

The National Council on Disability Affairs, the Carga Regional Committee on Disability Affairs, and the Department of Social Welfare and Development have worked together to conduct an access audit for Tandag city in the Philippines.

The combined organizations have put forth efforts to determine how well the government is implementing the local accessibility law, Batas Pambansa BLG 344. Governor Johnny T. Pimentel has welcomed the access audit and encourages the organizations to reinvigorate the disability sector of their society.

The audit was based on five main criteria essential to the proper implementation of the BLG 344 Act in a city building: wheelchair ramps, entrance sizes, handicap accessible toilets, availability of handicap parking spaces, and stair safety requirements. The results have shown some problem areas, such as lack of handrails, steep ramps and no signage, but the government has already started working to correct these errors and they should be done fixed within a month.

The government greatly appreciates the information gathered, as they now will be able to better determine how well they are enhancing the mobility of disabled people in the city, as well as receive valuable citizen feedback on the new implementations.
